How did you hear about Intergen-Trafford?
I went to a volunteer fair at the Coppice Library in Sale West back in late 2023 where Intergen-Trafford were recruiting. I thought Intergen-Trafford could be a good match for what I wanted to do as a volunteer. and as I am in that older people’s age bracket, I realised it could work well.
Why did you choose to volunteer with Intergen-Trafford?
I was looking for an opportunity to help children because I enjoy being around my grandchildren and reading to them. I strongly believe that encouraging children to read opens many opportunities be that educational or purely for personal pleasure. All my grandchildren love reading but I am aware that not all children are lucky enough to have the support of books or adults with the time. So, if a little volunteering help can be brought into the classroom to relieve the pressure on teachers, it’s got to be worth doing.
What do you like about the work done by Intergen-Trafford?
I do like that they are involving the older generation because I think that the link between “grandparents” and “grandchildren” can benefit both; they are two generations made for each other! I also feel invested in that all five of my grandchildren go to local schools and volunteering with Intergen-Trafford is a good way for me to be part of my community. Intergen-Trafford is a local charity with its roots firmly set into the local communities of Trafford and volunteers in school are able to help in many ways, not just reading.
What is your role within the charity?
I originally thought of becoming a volunteer in a school but after speaking with Intergen-Trafford’s representative I realised that I had the capacity to take on and enjoy a coordinator’s role. I have been shadowing Sue Cameron who is retiring from her coordinator’s role (but staying as a Trustee) and I now look forward to introducing myself to the schools and the current volunteers in my given area and give them the support they need. But also, I will take part in recruiting volunteers as there is plenty of demand for them. I find that learning something new and exciting is a great way to enjoy your retirement.
