Worthington Primary school have recently introduced 2 therapy dogs. The dogs are called Connie, who is one year old and belongs to the Head, and Freddie (in the picture) who is 7 and belongs to Alison English who is the SENCO. (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). The dogs started formal therapy training in January under the Paws training scheme. This involves a significant amount of online training for staff involved also.
The dogs have proved a huge addition to the staff. They are used with individuals, particularly those who are struggling. The children will read to the dogs and are really motivated to do this. Dogs also go into class and work alongside small groups of children. They are particularly successful in helping to calm children who are upset and distressed. The children react well to Connie and Freddie who are also used as rewards for children who love to spend time with them.
